Luanda: The Angolan president and African Union chairperson, Joo Louren§o, emphasized on Tuesday that the discussions at the 7th AU-EU Summit demonstrate a strong collective vision of the relationship between the two continents. Speaking at the event's close, which brought together heads of state and government from Africa and Europe in Luanda, Louren§o said these ties are destined and obliged to walk together, fostering understanding and finding common solutions to shared challenges, as was evident during discussions on peace and security, prosperity, migration, and mobility.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan head of state stressed that defending effective multilateralism is the best hope for building a more just, balanced, peaceful, and prosperous world. He also emphasized that the partnership between the African Union and the European Union is based on more than just ideas or well-intentioned declarations; it is grounded in concrete actions guided by dynamism, practicality, and tangible results that improve the lives of people on both continents.
Louren§o noted that this positive evolution in relations, as reflected in the progress achieved since the 2022 Brussels Summit, can be seen in the areas of peace and security, health, climate and energy cooperation, trade, investment, mobility, and migration. The AU chairperson argued that this progress is reflected in the implementation report of the 6th Summit Declaration, which was presented in Luanda and highlights the achievements obtained and areas requiring additional effort.
Louren§o stated that the critical and responsible manner in which both parties analyze existing cooperation is an essential advantage that allows for the continuous improvement of joint working mechanisms. He said this principle is reflected in the results of the 7th Summit, the Luanda Declaration, which translates the political will to pursue "joint paths" that lead to results capable of contributing to the development and improvement of the living conditions of African and European populations.
Among the agreed-upon commitments, Louren§o highlighted the need to expand cooperation on peace and security, with the goal of promoting stronger and more coordinated responses against terrorism and violent extremism. He added that the consensus on intensifying climate action was equally important, including increased funding for adaptation and resilience, as well as support for the African energy transition.
Louren§o declared that strengthening economic ties took center stage as well, with new commitments aimed at boosting investment and revitalizing African economies. The AU leader said the summit represented another decisive step in consolidating a partnership based on mutual trust, shared responsibility, and a common ambition. He stressed that true success depends on transforming the current commitments into concrete, effective, and sustainable actions that benefit the peoples of Africa and Europe.
