President Joo Louren§o Engages in Strategic Dialogue with Algerian Prime Minister

Algiers: Angolan President Joo Louren§o held a private meeting on Tuesday in Algiers with Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb. The meeting was part of a 72-hour state visit that President Louren§o has been undertaking in Algeria since Monday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the historical relationship between Angola and Algeria goes back to the National Liberation Struggle, during which Algeria provided essential political, diplomatic, and military support to Angolan nationalist movements. As part of his agenda, President Louren§o visited the Fouka 2 seawater desalination plant in Tipaza province and the Higher School of Artificial Intelligence.

The diplomatic ties between the two nations were officially established in 1976, following Angola's proclamation of independence in November 1975. These relations were solidified with the signing of the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in April 1983 in Luanda. Over the years, Angola and Algeria have enhanced their collaboration across various sectors, including energy, oil and gas, mineral resources, agriculture, education, transport, defense, and technical-professional training.

Bilateral political consultations have intensified recently, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025, establishing a permanent Political Consultation Mechanism between Angola and Algeria.
