Postpartum Hemorrhages: SOGOB Advocates for Access to Essential Medicines

Ouagadougou: As part of its 11th congress, which is being held from June 2 to 4, 2025 in Ouagadougou, the Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Burkina (SOGOB) organized on Tuesday a high-level advocacy evening for the accessibility of thermostable carbetocin and blood loss assessment bags in maternity wards with a view to putting an end to postpartum hemorrhages which continue to grieve families in Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality in Burkina Faso, and women die from it every day while giving birth. SOGOB offers innovative, effective, and accessible solutions to public decision-makers to curb this pernicious disease that decimates entire lives.

“We call for the effective integration of thermostable carbetocin into essential medicine supply programs, the systematic acquisition of blood loss assessment bags in delivery kits and the allocation of a specific budget to strengthen the fight against obstetric hemorrhage,” pleaded the president of SOGOB, Professor Charlemagne Ou©draogo.

“Investing in these innovations means saving lives. It means telling every woman in Burkina Faso that motherhood should not be a life-threatening risk,” he said. Professor Ou©draogo called on all health stakeholders to commit to making thermostable carbetocin and blood loss assessment bags available in all maternity wards so that no woman dies in childbirth.

The Minister of Health represented this evening, on behalf of the Government, reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal health in Burkina Faso. “We will work with our partners to integrate heat-stable carbetocin into supply chains and make assessment bags available in maternity wards at all levels,” said Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou. For him, this fight is common and the Ministry of Health will be there because, he maintains, the life of a mother is the life of an entire nation.
