Portuguese Embassy and Local Partners to Host Workshop on Photography’s Role in Documenting History

Windhoek — In an upcoming event aimed at photographers and visual storytellers, the Portuguese Embassy in Windhoek, in collaboration with StArt Art Gallery and the Namibian Arts Association, will conduct a photography workshop from November 22 to 28, 2023. The workshop will be led by renowned Portuguese photographer Carlos Barradas.

According to a new release by NAMPA, the workshop, titled “Photography, History, and Freedom: An Exploration of Historic Moments,” falls within the context of the 50th anniversary celebration of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution scheduled for next year. The Carnation Revolution took place on April 25, 1974, and marked the end of a dictatorial regime that had been in place in Portugal since 1926.

The workshop aims to investigate the role of photography in capturing and interpreting historic moments. Drawing insights from photographers, anthropologists, and sociologists, participants will learn how visual narratives influence perceptions of freedom across various social, cultural, political, and historical frameworks. “Having the Carnation Revolution in Portugal as a visual example, and through practical sessions, editing, and exhibition preparation, different narratives on freedom will be created,” the media release stated.

Stressing that there are no equipment limitations for attendees, the workshop’s objective is to stimulate a visual dialogue, exploring ideas about visual culture and the influence of images in shaping contemporary culture. The participants will be given several resources in advance, including videos, eBooks, and an image library.

The series of activities will culminate in an exhibition slated for 2024. Carlos Barradas, who will lead the workshop, holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and has produced works on a variety of themes including territory, colonialism, post-colonialism, and new masculinities. In 2020, he was recognized by GUP Magazine as one of the 100 European photography talents and his works have been exhibited in Brazil, France, Italy, and Portugal.
