Population in Luanda Records an Average 3.8pct Annual Growth

Luanda: The capital of Angola, Luanda, has an estimated annual population growth rate of 3.8 percent, surpassing the national average of 3.5 percent, according to data from the 2024 Census released Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

According to Angola Press News Agency, the General Population and Housing Census counted 8.6 million people in Luanda, of whom 4.2 million are men and 4.4 million are women. This results in 97 men for every 100 women, with an annual growth rate of approximately 250,000 inhabitants.

At the presentation of the final results of the 2024 Luanda Census, INE Director General Joel Futi stated that the province remains the main population center, accounting for about a quarter of the country’s total population. Futi noted that the 2014 census indicated Luanda’s population was around four million, compared to more than eight million today, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8 percent.

In addition to being the political capital of Angola and the main economic, industrial, and cultural center of the country, Luanda plays a crucial role in the statistical portrait of the nation due to its demographic size, social complexity, and economic relevance.

The five most populous municipalities exceed four million inhabitants, representing about 53 percent of the province’s population (4.5 million), while the three least populous municipalities do not exceed 339,000 inhabitants. Data showed that the literacy rate for people aged 15 and older is estimated at 94.5 percent, while approximately 37 percent of people aged 18 and older completed secondary education and 6 percent completed higher education.

INE data also indicates that there have been more than two million households in Luanda since 2024, with an average of 3.4 members per household.
