UGUNJA: Residents of Orao Village in Ugunja Sub County, Siaya County, celebrated joyously as an American-based non-governmental organization provided full uniform kits to the students of a local primary school. The event marked a significant moment for the community, which has faced challenges in providing school attire for its children.
According to Kenya News Agency, Munguy’s Hand of Compassion (MHC), a U.S.-based NGO, donated complete uniform sets-including socks, shoes, trousers, shirts, skirts, or blouses-to all students at Orao Primary and Junior Secondary Schools. Reverend Ayub Kayo, MHC’s Director in Charge of Africa, addressed the school during the ceremony, explaining that the organization identified the school and community as needing support. Rev. Kayo emphasized the negative impact that lack of proper school uniforms can have on children’s morale and self-esteem.
Rev. Kayo, who is also affiliated with Deliverance Church in Nakuru, stated, “We came to fill that gap and bring up the confidence of
the children to enable them to perform better.” He highlighted MHC’s commitment, led by founder Steve Mungai, to positively influence children’s lives, aiming for their future success. The NGO has thus far provided similar support to over 10 schools in Nakuru, Nyeri, and Siaya counties.
Phoebe Wanjira, an official at MHC, revealed that the NGO invested over 500,000 to supply uniforms for 168 primary and junior secondary students at the school. “The impact should be in the long run. We should be able to see these children achieving greater things when we have ensured that their self-esteem has been raised,” she stated.
Nicholas Wasonga, Head Teacher of Orao Primary School, and parent Damaris Omengo, expressed gratitude towards the donors, acknowledging that local families have struggled to afford uniforms. “The poverty level in this community is very high,” Wasonga noted, urging for continued support from well-wishers.
