SISSILI – From May 10 to 13, 2024, a comprehensive polio vaccination campaign is set to immunize 72,554 children aged 0 to 59 months within the Léo health district in the Center-West region of Burkina Faso. This effort is part of a national initiative to eradicate poliomyelitis and combat child malnutrition.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Chief Medical Officer of the Léo health district, the campaign aims not only to vaccinate children against polio but also to screen for malnutrition among those aged 6 to 59 months. An advocacy workshop was conducted in Léo on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, bringing together local authorities and influential community leaders to mobilize support for this crucial health initiative.
Dr. Abdou emphasized the severe impact of poliomyelitis, describing it as a highly contagious and debilitating disease. He stressed that vaccination is the sole preventive measure against polio and highlighted that the campaign targets all children within the specified age group, regardless of their previous vaccination status. The workshop provided attendees with essential information on polio and updates on the ongoing vaccination efforts.
Tewendé Isaac Sia, the High Commissioner of Sissili province, called for widespread community involvement, particularly from parents, to ensure the campaign’s success and reach a national vaccination rate of 97%. Mr. Sia also expressed his gratitude towards the Léo health district for their dedication to improving the health of the local population.
