BOULSA — A major polio vaccination campaign is underway in Boulsa, the capital of Namentenga province in the Center-North region, aiming to immunize 50,174 children aged between 0 to 59 months, including 45,827 malnourished children aged 6 to 59 months. The campaign, which runs from May 10 to 14, 2024, is part of a broader effort to address polio in vulnerable populations.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the vaccination campaign adopts a door-to-door approach to ensure that all eligible children are reached. Sister Véronique Doulé, head of the CSPS Saint François D’Assise in Boulsa, described their role in the campaign: their facility serves as a fixed center where the vaccination team administers polio doses, records details, and marks each vaccinated child with indelible ink on their fingers to prevent re-vaccination.
The Boulsa health district comprises the communes of Boala, Dargo, Boulsa, and Zéguédéguin. Namentenga, due to its challenging security and humanitarian conditions, is afforded an extra day in the national vaccination schedule, allowing health workers more time to reach all children in need.
