SWAKOPMUND: The construction of a new police station in the DRC informal settlement of Swakopmund is set to be completed by January 2025. The facility, funded entirely by Rössing Uranium at a cost exceeding N. dollars 20 million, aims to bolster security in the rapidly growing area. Construction began in July and has reached 46 percent completion, with efforts now focused on finalizing the reinforced concrete roofs.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Rössing Uranium’s Manager for Corporate Communication, Daylight Ekandjo, confirmed that the project is progressing on schedule and within its planned scope. As of mid-October, the substructure of the facility is complete, and the main structure is 70 percent finished. The project will feature essential facilities, including holding cells, an interrogation room, a doctor’s consultation room, an evidence room, and offices for staff, including one for the Station Commander. Additional amenities include ablution facilities, a staff kitchen, and a server/radio room.

S
wakopmund Municipality Chief Executive Officer, Archie Benjamin, underscored the importance of the new station in addressing safety concerns in the town, particularly in the informal settlement. He highlighted how this project aligns with the municipality’s broader capital projects, especially those focused on affordable housing. Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona of the Namibian Police Force’s Erongo region praised the swift progress and commitment demonstrated by Rössing Uranium, noting that the new station would serve as a benchmark for future national projects. He assured that trained personnel would be deployed to ensure safety upon the station’s opening. The construction has provided employment for over 100 workers, with no safety incidents reported thus far.
