Vihiga: A multi-agency security team from Vihiga and Kakamega counties led by Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohammed has nabbed over 30,000 liters of molasses and 30 liters of chang’aa in a major crackdown of illicit liquor and drugs in the Kilingili area that borders the two counties.
According to Kenya News Agency, Vihiga County Commissioner Peter Maina confirmed that three suspects, two women and a man, were arrested during the operation. Maina stated that the operation precedes the 100 days of the Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) in the area, a campaign aimed at curbing drug and substance abuse, illicit brews, and criminal gangs. This initiative is set to officially begin on Friday following the president’s directive for a more aggressive national response to alcohol and drug abuse.
The County Commissioner warned local organized illegal groups, notably the 42 brothers’ criminal gang, of impending arrests and court prosecutions. He also cautioned motorcycle riders against participating in disruptive boda boda culture, particularly making noise during funeral processions with loud music.
Maina further clarified that Disco Matanga, a practice common in the Western region, remains illegal. He expressed concerns that criminals exploit the loud music played at funerals to disturb the community. He assured residents that the National Government Administrivia Officers (NGAO) will monitor all events, including funerals, and will take action against any criminal activities.
‘As NGAO, we are also engaging in dialogue with residents, especially the youth, through our regular public barazas in a bid to reduce cases of drug abuse, illicit brews, and organized gangs in the county,’ said Maina.
