Police Officers Arrested for Bribery in Namibia Released on Bail

OSHIVETO — Nine police officers arrested last Friday for allegedly accepting bribes were granted bail at the Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court on Monday, permitting them to return to duty under specific conditions.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the officers were accused of taking bribes totaling N$17,000 from two seven-seater vehicle drivers, allowing them to bypass a police checkpoint at Oshivelo in the Oshikoto Region with illicit goods. The alleged exchange took place over several months. The Deputy Commissioner of the Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations in Oshikoto, Titus Ekandjo, stated that the suspects appeared before Principal Magistrate Juliet Mulilo. They were each granted bail set at N$4,000.

Ekandjo further noted that the bail conditions require the accused officers not to contact any witnesses or interfere with the ongoing police investigation. The case has been postponed to 26 November 2024, providing time for the officers to secure legal representation.
