West Alego, Kenya – In a coordinated security operation early this morning, police forces gunned down two suspected members of a terror cell in Hawinga, West Alego. A third suspect was injured and is currently hospitalized at Siaya county referral hospital. The operation led to the recovery of two guns previously stolen from policemen in a recent ambush.
According to Kenya News Agency, the successful operation involved specialized teams from Busia, CID headquarters, and Siaya, acting on intelligence reports. Kimaiyo detailed how public support played a crucial role in identifying the suspects’ hideout. Upon approach, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a firefight that ended fatally for two of the suspects.
During the search of the house, the police found several copies of the Quran, other Islamic writings, and a list of names suspected to be members of the terror group, suggesting involvement in radicalization activities. The house also contained a spear, a solar light, and various clothing items. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the cell, including the owner of the house who evaded the police.
This police action follows a recent attack on police officers escorting examination papers to Mahero secondary school, resulting in one officer’s death and another’s serious injury. The attackers, armed with machetes, ambushed the officers just meters from the school gate, catching them off guard. A dramatic chase ensued, with the examination official escaping unharmed with the papers.
