Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that the government is allocating nearly 130 billion Birr to the health sector in Ethiopia. The premier made this statement during a discussion held with health professionals from across the country.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Prime Minister elaborated on the government’s commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of the health sector, emphasizing that the budget for this sector has been steadily increasing. A few years ago, the allocation was around 70 billion Birr, which has now almost doubled to nearly 130 billion Birr.
The Prime Minister further highlighted that last year, the government allocated 9 billion Birr in subsidies specifically for purchasing medicines. He underscored that Ethiopia’s expenditure on healthcare surpasses that of any neighboring countries, with significant investments in health sector construction.
Despite the increased budget, Abiy emphasized that the current allocation is still inadequate to meet the growing needs of
the sector. The government remains committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring improved healthcare for its citizens.
