Luanda: Angolan playwright Jose Mena Abrantes expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday with the public recognition given to the Ilinga Teatro Group as part of the celebrations marking 50 years of national independence. During the ceremony presided over by the Head of State, Joo Louren§o, the artist highlighted the importance of the Ilinga company’s 37 years of uninterrupted activity.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Mena Abrantes, a prominent figure in Angolan culture and journalism, served as director of the ANGOP News Agency in the years following independence. Speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony honoring various individuals, the playwright highlighted the significance of the distinction he received. “Receiving this recognition directly from the hands of Comrade President is something that compensates for the many sacrifices made over these nearly four decades,” said Mena Abrantes.

Founded in 1987, Ilinga Teatro is one of the oldest theater companies in continuous activity in Angola, with more than 200 members over the years. Despite structural difficulties and a lack of institutional support, the group continues to operate without interruption, staging national and international works, as well as representing Angola at various festivals abroad. “The spirit of the house remains, even with the natural renewal of its members. We have actors who have been with the group for over 30 years, many without training, who learned their craft on stage, doing theater,” he noted.

For Mena Abrantes, Ilinga’s longevity is also a symbol of resilience and an example for other cultural collectives in the country. Despite the advances, the playwright points out that the sector continues to face challenges, such as a shortage of performance venues and subsidies for artistic production. When asked about the feeling of mission accomplished, he replied, “We have done what was possible, within the group’s capabilities. And that, in itself, is a source of pride.”

The Ilinga group maintains an active schedule and is preparing new theatrical productions for the coming months. Mena Abrantes, who was spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic of Angola in the 1990s, is currently an advisor for institutional communication. He is considered a central figure in post-independence Angolan intelligence and regularly participates in cultural debates, colloquiums, and conferences on African literature, politics, and identity. He is currently active as an essayist, playwright, and communications consultant. His works are studied in African and European universities and are an essential reference in African Lusophone literature.
