Murang’a: Church leaders and members of the clergy from Murang’a and surrounding counties are set to benefit from a new initiative as Pioneer International University (PIU) launches its School of Divinity. This new faculty aims to address the needs of those interested in pursuing theology-related courses.
According to Kenya News Agency, the school was inaugurated on Tuesday and will begin by offering a postgraduate diploma in transformational church administration and leadership. This program is designed to enhance the effective management of religious institutions and groups by integrating principles of synodality, which include shared decision-making, collaboration, and inclusivity with effective church leadership and management.
Prof. Gideon Maina, the University’s Vice Chancellor, emphasized the program’s innovative approach. He highlighted its importance in an era marked by rapid technological advancements and shifting cultural paradigms. Maina stressed that the role of theology and spiritual reflection in higher education is more critical than ever, and the establishment of the School of Divinity at PIU is a response to this need. The program is rooted in church teachings and aims to equip individuals with the skills needed for community building, spiritual growth, and social justice.
Maina also pointed out that the program will provide clergy members with leadership skills to resolve conflicts within their communities. He emphasized the importance of collaborative leadership and shared governance, which honor the dignity and contributions of every church member. According to Maina, divinity schools remain vital custodians of moral and ethical discourse, offering insights that go beyond empirical data.
PIU’s Chancellor, Peter Munga, highlighted the necessity for clergy to further their studies to effectively handle emerging issues. He noted that the divinity school would greatly assist local church leaders and clergy in furthering their studies without needing to travel far from their communities. Munga believes that transformational leadership can lead the nation to greater heights in church administration and leadership.
Bishop Dr. Timothy Gichere, the chief guest and representative of the Mt Kenya Central ACK Diocese, remarked that the postgraduate diploma would help usher clergy into a new level of management. He noted that this initiative is a significant milestone for the country, enabling church leaders to effectively manage conflicts and challenges brought to them by congregants and community members.
