Nyahururu: Police Officers from Nyahururu Wednesday arrested one suspect and recovered mobile phones suspected to have been stolen. The 50 phones, three tablets, and a laptop computer were recovered from a kiosk at the Nyahururu town bus park.
According to Kenya News Agency, Nyahururu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Bernard Odino stated that it is believed the suspect was part of a phone-stealing syndicate with connections extending to neighboring countries. ‘The stolen phones are transported to Uganda, where we believe the network has found a market,’ said Odino.
The administrator highlighted that Nyahururu, one of the major towns in Laikipia County, had been experiencing a rise in mugging incidents recently, where victims were robbed of phones and money. He urged the County government to dismantle all unplanned structures near the Nyahururu bus park, citing that makeshift structures serve as hideouts for muggers and other criminals in the town.
The recovery of the phones and other electronic gadgets comes barely two days after police discovered additional electronics and household items. During this operation, two suspects, including a 24-year-old, were arrested, and assorted items valued at Sh600,000 were seized in a night raid on a rented house near the New Kenya Co-operative Creameries factory in Nyahururu town.
The recovered items included seven television sets, 12 mobile phones, five national identity cards, two bicycles, and a motorcycle, among others. The two suspects, reportedly relatives, were apprehended during the Monday night raid, while police are on the lookout for two other suspects who managed to escape.
