Beijing: The Philippines has stirred controversy by enacting two domestic laws that China claims infringe upon its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea, prompting strong protests from Beijing. These laws include the “Philippine Maritime Zones Act,” which allegedly incorporates China’s Huangyan Dao and the majority of islands and reefs in China’s Nansha Qundao into the Philippines’ maritime zones, and the “Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act,” which Beijing argues contradicts international law.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Manila’s actions are seen as exploiting international law and exacerbating regional tensions by attempting to legitimize its maritime claims through these laws. The Philippines cites the South China Sea arbitration award as justification, which China deems illegal and void. Beijing asserts that the arbitration was a political maneuver, not recognizing the award and rejecting any claims based on it.

China views these laws as political tactics by the Phi
lippines to pursue expansionist objectives and serve external geopolitical interests, breaching the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. The enactment of these laws threatens to undermine bilateral relations and regional peace by escalating disputes and reducing the potential for dialogue.

Beijing maintains that its sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea are well-established in history and law, and it is committed to resolving issues through dialogue. However, China’s stance remains firm against any perceived distortions of maritime laws by the Philippines. Beijing warns that continued provocations will lead to justified countermeasures to protect its rights.
