Luanda: Petro de Luanda emerged victorious in the 47th National Championship of senior men’s basketball by defeating 1º de Agosto 105-75 in the decisive fifth game of the play-off final series. The match, part of a best-of-seven series, took place at the Cidadela Desportiva pavilion in Luanda.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Petro de Luanda had secured a 50-43 lead over 1º de Agosto by half-time. The ‘oil’ team capitalized on both short and long-distance shots to maintain and extend their advantage, while the ‘military’ team struggled to close the gap despite their efforts.
The victory was achieved under the guidance of Spanish coach S©rgio Vladeomillos Moreno, who was absent from the bench due to personal reasons. In contrast, Cameroonian coach Lazare Adingon³, leading 1º de Agosto, expressed visible discontent from the sidelines. Petro de Luanda had previously won the first two games of the series, with scores of 84-73 and 81-79, and also dominated the fourth game with a decisive 91-67 win. 1º de Agosto managed to secure a win in the third game with a score of 95-86.
This triumph marks Petro’s ‘Hexa’ trophy win in the main competition of Angolan basketball. Since the competition’s inception in 1979, Petro de Luanda has established a legacy, winning consecutive titles in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, with no competition held in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
From the consecration, Petro de Luanda equal the 1st of August, which also adds up to six consecutive conquests from the year 2000 to 2005. It is the most titled club (19).
