Parliamentarians Congratulate Joo Louren§o on AU Presidency

Luanda: Deputies to the Angola National Assembly congratulated the Head of State, Joo Louren§o, on his election, last Saturday, Feb 15, to the Presidency of the African Union (AU) Organization. Joo Louren§o took office during the AU 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Vote of Congratulations for the Election of the President was approved during the II Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the National Assembly, which takes place on Thursday, Feb 20. The document states that parliamentarians learned ‘with great satisfaction and joy’ of the election of the Head of State to the position of President of the African Union for the year 2025.

They recognize this act as acknowledgment of the commitment of the Angolan statesman, as well as the role that Angola has been playing in favor of development and peace on the African continent. As a result, they congratulate President Joo Louren§o for ‘such a high distinction’, confident that, in the exercise of his mandate, he will find the best ways to tackle the multiple challenges that Africa faces.

The African Union (AU), now comprising 55 members, was established on July 9, 2002, in Durban, South Africa, replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU), founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Joo Louren§o becomes the 23rd president of the African Union, succeeding Mohamed Ould Cheikh AI-Ghazouani, President of Mauritania.
