Parliament Approves Amendments to Angolan Passport Law

Luanda: The National Assembly approved a proposal to amend the Angolan Passport Law and the regime of exit and entry of nationals, incorporating retired Attorneys General among those eligible for diplomatic passports. The law was passed during the 2nd ordinary session of Parliament with 104 votes in favor, 71 against, and 2 abstentions.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the amendments include retired judges and deputy attorneys general among the beneficiaries of diplomatic status, even if they are no longer in office. The executive branch, which proposed the amendment, argued for the inclusion of these figures in diplomatic status, emphasizing their merit.

The opinion from specialized committees indicated that the Executive’s proposal aims to explicitly grant diplomatic status to meritorious individuals. The current law, Law No. 22/21 of 18 October, delineates the entities entitled to diplomatic passports, including former Presidents, National Assembly members, and presiding judges. The amendments extend these rights to former Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers, and advisors to the President.
