Ouagadougou: The central police station in P´ and the National Road Safety Office (ONASER) have launched a joint initiative to promote helmet use among the city's motorcyclists. This awareness campaign, held on January 17, 2026, aims to significantly reduce road fatalities as part of Burkina Faso's newly adopted national road safety strategy for 2026-2030.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the campaign focused on educating the public about the critical role helmets play in preventing head injuries, which account for a substantial number of deaths in accidents involving motorized two-wheelers. Baba Koro, the central police commissioner of P´, emphasized the campaign's approach of using dialogue and awareness to convey the message that "wearing a helmet means protecting your own life."
The initiative, which successfully reached over 500 individuals, will extend over a week and will also tackle other hazardous behaviors like speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. The Burkinabe government has set a target to cut road deaths by 50% by 2030, and promoting helmet use is a key component of this strategy.
