Over 20 Rundu Nurses Trained in Specialised Fields

Rundu: The Ministry of Health and Social Services has awarded scholarships to 24 nurse practitioners at the Rundu Intermediate Hospital to pursue specialised training in critical nursing fields during the 2025/26 financial year. Governor of the Kavango East Region Hamunyera Hambyuka, in a speech read on his behalf during the International Nurses Day commemoration held at Rundu on Tuesday, said the beneficiaries are specialising in areas such as operating theatre nursing, intensive care nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal care, as well as paediatric and child health nursing.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiatives reflect the ministry's commitment to strengthening the capacity, competence, and professionalism of the nursing workforce. During the current financial year, 15 staff nurses were sponsored to upgrade their qualifications to become nurse practitioners, while three nurse practitioners were sent for further specialisation.

The governor also emphasised the importance of professionalism and appearance within the healthcare sector, saying nurses are ambassadors of the healthcare system and should maintain neat and clean uniforms to inspire public confidence. Meanwhile, University of Namibia Rundu Campus lecturer and nurse practitioner Kemba Haushiku said empowering nurses contributes to saving lives, improving healthcare systems, and strengthening communities.
