SEYCHELLES: In a significant move to bolster maritime security and coordination, over 20 nations bordering the Indian Ocean participated in the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Maritime Exercise (MEX) organized by France in Seychelles. The exercise, which commenced on Tuesday, aimed to enhance information sharing and strengthen collaboration among naval forces in the region.
According to Seychelles News Agency, the exercise included naval officers from various countries, including a delegation from the Indian frigate INS Sharda. The event, held in partnership with the Seychelles Defence Forces and particularly the Seychelles Coast Guard, featured a range of activities, including a table-top exercise at the Military Training and Support Centre and a cocktail reception on the French Naval ship "NIVOSE."
French Ambassador to Seychelles, Olivia Berkeley-Christmann, addressed the participants at the cocktail reception. She highlighted the exercise as a testament to the ongoing dialogue between naval personnel from different countries. Berkeley-Christmann underscored the shared challenges faced in the Indian Ocean, such as illegal fishing, climate change, piracy, illegal trafficking, maritime safety, accidents, and pollution. She emphasized the importance of the strong ties forged during the exercise in managing future maritime crises collaboratively.
Brigadier Michael Rosette, Chief of the Seychelles Defence Forces, reflected on the valuable experience and knowledge gained by Seychellois officers through the exercise. He pointed out the benefits of increased contact with other Indian Ocean nations, including access to a software created by the EU, which enables improved communication and planning for various operations. Rosette expressed optimism about continued collaboration with regional countries in responding to maritime incidents and sharing experiences.
This exercise marks a significant step in regional cooperation, aiming to improve maritime security and crisis management in the Indian Ocean.
