Over 1,000 people missing after Hawaii wildfires

Search operations continue on the Hawaiian island of Maui where more than a thousand people are missing after the fires, announced the governor, Josh Green, on CBS.

“More than 1,000 people are missing, around 1,050. It [the research] will take several more weeks, he said. 85% of the [disaster] areas have been inspected. We are now sifting through large buildings, which requires decluttering floors and structures. That remaining 15% could take weeks. »

A wildfire broke out on the Hawaiian island of Maui on August 9. Due to strong winds, the flames quickly spread to the tourist town of Lahaina which was completely devastated. The victims of forest fires numbered 110. About 4,500 people remained homeless. Wildfires in Hawaii have become the most destructive in the United States in the past century. Josh Green said the damage from the “biggest natural disaster” in its history was estimated at $6 billion.

Maui residents have repeatedly noted the lack of support from the presidential administration. Joe Biden and his wife will travel to the island of Maui on August 21.
