Okahandja: Members of the Ovambanderu Youth League (OYL) have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of senior traditional councillor, Gerson Kunomundu Katjirua, acknowledging his significant impact on the youth and the community.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Tsepo Katjingurukee Mutenge, the acting chairperson of the youth interim committee, highlighted the late councillor’s service marked by dignity, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to preserving cultural heritage and advancing the Ovambanderu people. Mutenge said, “His guidance, leadership, and deep-rooted sense of duty will be remembered with great reverence.”
The youth leader also recalled Katjirua’s instrumental role in initiating the Ovambanderu Garden Project in the Epukiro Constituency’s Okovimburu settlement. Mutenge noted that Katjirua envisioned the project to provide employment opportunities for young people, mandating that 80 percent of the workforce be youth. This initiative allowed many young individuals in Epukiro to gain financial benefits.
Mutenge further expressed sadness over the fact that the OYL had planned to host a congress in Gobabis, where Katjirua was to be a key speaker, discussing youth development and community issues. “We expected him to look into youth matters, such as youth development ideas, and the behavioural aspects of the youth among the community,” Mutenge remarked.
Additional testimonies from Ovambanderu youth, gathered by Nampa, underscored Katjirua’s role as an exemplary leader and unifier. Edmundo Uaundjomambo Ndjavera from Ezorongondo village appreciated Katjirua’s dedication to cultural preservation, stating that his involvement in events motivated the youth to embrace their Ovambanderu heritage.
Ndjavera also highlighted Katjirua’s contributions to community development and farming, emphasizing his openness to share knowledge and ideas. Okeri Siririka of Okozondje echoed these sentiments, noting Katjirua’s advisory role and his encouragement for the youth to pursue self-reliance.
Katjirua, who was a war veteran, passed away on 27 April 2025 at the age of 84. He was laid to rest at the Ovambanderu Heroes’ Acre in Okahandja on Sunday.
