Ovambanderu Commemoration Events Cancelled in Tribute to Late Councillor Gerson Kunomundu Katjirua

Okahandja: The Ovambanderu Traditional Authority has announced the cancellation of all commemoration events planned for this year following the passing of senior traditional councillor Gerson Kunomundu Katjirua. Chief Eben Tjozohongo II Nguvauva explained that this decision aligns with the traditions and customs of the Ovambanderu community observed upon the loss of a respected figure buried at sacred sites, such as the Ovambanderu Heroes' Acre in Okahandja.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the cancellations include the annual event held in Okahandja during the second week of June, the Otjunda and Okeseta commemorations in the Omaheke Region (observed separately each year on 14 August), and an event that was scheduled to take place in Botswana last weekend. Chief Nguvauva emphasised that the cancellation applies to all Ovambanderu sacred sites in both Namibia and Botswana.

Reflecting on the life of the deceased councillor, Chief Nguvauva recalled witnessing Katjirua's dedication from a young age, describing him as a generous leader. "He was a good servant of my father Chief Munjuku Nguvauva II and the entire Ovambanderu community and was always available whenever he was needed. He sacrificed a lot," the chief stated.

Chief Nguvauva also urged the Ovambanderu community to remain strong during this period of mourning. Senior traditional councillor Gerson Kunomundu Katjirua was laid to rest on Sunday at Orumbo roVapangurua in Okahandja.
