OUTAPI—The Outapi Mayoral Cup, concluded on Tuesday at the Olufuko Centre, has been declared a significant success by local officials and participants alike. The event not only fostered spirited competition but also bolstered local commerce and community bonds.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Outapi Mayor Selma Asino praised the tournament during the awards ceremony for its vibrant sportsmanship and the positive atmosphere it cultivated among competitors. “This tournament was more than just a sports competition; it served as a platform to promote physical and mental well-being and strengthen community ties,” Asino remarked. She emphasized the economic benefits for local vendors who had the opportunity to showcase and sell their goods, boosting local business.
The football and netball competitions were highlights of the event, with the Covid 22 football team emerging victorious over NamPol FC with a score of 2-0 in the finals. Covid 22 was rewarded with a trophy and N$26,000 in prize money, while NamPol FC received N$18,000 for their efforts. The third-place team, Okafa FC, earned N$10,000. In the netball finals, Rocket NC triumphed over Omusati Blazer and secured N$12,000, with the runners-up receiving N$8,000 and the Kunene U-17 team taking home N$6,000 for third place.
Mayor Asino promised an even more expansive and engaging tournament next year, aiming to further enhance the event's impact on the community and local economy.
