Ouagadougou: Ousmane Dicko, alias Abdoulaye Kontaane, spent nearly a decade entangled in terrorism before being apprehended and opting for a transformative change. A former influential figure within the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), Dicko was long perceived as a primary orchestrator of attacks in eastern Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dicko's journey into extremism began in 2014 when he traveled to Mali for extremist religious indoctrination and military training. Misled by the promise of a religious battle leading to paradise, he returned to Burkina Faso in 2017, aiming to establish Sharia law. He became a pivotal figure in the GSIM, leveraging his indoctrination and knowledge of the terrain to extend his influence across the Gulmu and Nakambe regions.

From 2017, Dicko was involved in assaults on police and gendarmerie in Pama, Nadiagou, and Comin-Yanga. In 2018, he orchestrated an attack on the Po customs post, a significant symbol for the Burkinab¨ economy. The following year, his operations extended to a cross-border attack in Laga, Niger, and a deadly assault on the gendarmerie in Soudougui.

Dicko continued his violent campaign into 2021, ambushing Defense and Security Forces and attacking Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland. His reign of terror persisted through 2022 and 2024, culminating in intensifying attacks in 2025 across various regions.

However, on August 15, 2025, Dicko's path shifted dramatically. Surrounded by Combatant Forces during a major operation, he was wounded and captured. Provided with medical care and spiritual guidance, Dicko realized the deception he had succumbed to over the past decade. Recognizing the true tenets of Islam, he repented and now advocates for peace.

Dicko urges his former comrades to disarm and warns young people against the misleading rhetoric of recruiters, emphasizing that life in militancy leads only to suffering and sin. His story underscores the deception faced by many youths and the professionalism of the Combat Forces in their mission to protect and restore national integrity.
