Ouagadougou Witnesses Rally for Extended Transition Period in Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Citizens from across Burkina Faso gathered at Issoufou Joseph Conombo Stadium in Ouagadougou to demand an extension of the country’s transitional government period. The demonstration, organized by the National Coordination of Citizen Watch Associations (CNAVC), saw several hundred participants from the capital city joining in.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the current transitional period, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré and scheduled to conclude in July 2024 with elections, should be extended. This transition was initiated following the political upheaval that led to the ouster of President Roch Marck Christian Kaboré. The rally featured chants such as “There is no election…!”, “Prolongation of the Transition”, “A new constitution for the total liberation and refoundation of Burkina Faso”, and “IB or nothing”. These slogans reflect the demonstrators’ belief in the necessity of prolonging the transitional government beyond its planned endpoint. The CNAVC, along with various other civil society groups, argue that the achievements under Captain Traoré’s leadership, particularly in security and development, warrant an extension of this transitional phase.
