OUAGADOUGOU-Thousands of Catholic faithful participated in a large-scale pilgrimage at the Notre Dame de Yagma sanctuary in Ouagadougou to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The event marked a significant gathering of worshippers who journeyed to the site, emphasizing devotion and communal prayer.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the pilgrimage saw hundreds of thousands of participants converging on the sanctuary from dawn, traveling by various means such as foot, bicycles, motorbikes, and cars. The site was heavily secured, with police conducting thorough searches of all attendees to ensure safety during the religious proceedings. The mass, held in the open air and shaded by trees, was led by Cardinal Phillipe Ouédraogo and attended by multiple government officials, including Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism.

The celebration also included a visit by another government delegation to the Saint Augustin parish of Bissighin, where messages of national unity were shared with the Catholic community. This year’s pilgrimage, the 29th of its kind at Yagma, was themed “Mary, queen of peace, servant of the Lord,” reflecting a focus on peace and service.
