Ouagadougou Marks Kamite New Year with Festive Celebrations

OUAGADOUGOU — The city of Ouagadougou celebrated the African New Year 6261 on Monday, marking the start of the year in the Kamite calendar with festivities at the Thomas Sankara memorial at 2 pm.

According to Burkina Information Agency, National Coordinator of the “Two Hours for Us, Two Hours for Kamita” initiative, this event is part of a nine-year tradition to reconnect with the ancient history of Africans tracing back to ancient Egypt. Mr. Bayala emphasized that the Kamite calendar is a symbol of self-worth and cultural pride for Africans, comparable to other races globally.

The festival not only celebrates African heritage and unity but also serves as a call to action for Africans and the diaspora to embrace and promote their shared identity and future aspirations. Mr. Bayala also mentioned that the adoption of the Kamite calendar helps to promote African culture and traditions, reflecting the historical and spiritual roots of the continent.

The event underscores the importance of solidarity among African nations and their diasporas in overcoming external domination and recognizing the origins and contributions of the Kamite civilization.
