Otjozondjupa Team Clinches Victory at National Debate Championships in Swakopmund

SWAKOPMUND—Team Otjozondjupa emerged victorious at the National Debate Championships, sealing their win unanimously against Team Omusati in a compelling final round. The teams contended over the motion concerning the removal of VIP convoys’ privileges, with Otjozondjupa opposing the motion.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the event, orchestrated by the Namibian Schools Debating Association (NSDA), saw participation from 14 regional teams comprising students from a variety of schools. The NSDA operates under the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture as a nonprofit entity. Team Ohangwena claimed the third place in this spirited contest supported by the Motor Vehicle Association (MVA) Fund.

The championships, which began last Saturday, featured debates on crucial issues including road safety in Namibia. Erongo Region Governor Neville André Itope, through a statement delivered on his behalf, highlighted the need for revisiting VIP convoy privileges to prevent their misuse and negative impact on road safety standards.

Jones Lutombi, MVA Fund’s Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention, remarked on the importance of the debate topic for fostering critical thinking and student engagement in road safety measures. He elaborated on the role of education, infrastructure, enforcement, and community involvement in enhancing pedestrian safety.

Dr. Elizabeth Namundjebo, president of the NSDA, emphasized the structure of the competition which begins at the school level and advances through cluster, circuit, and regional levels, culminating in the national championship. She noted the transformative power of public speaking and debate in shaping public opinion and inspiring societal change.
