This collaborative effort aims to address the delays in food distribution under the government's drought relief program. According to Namibia Press Agency, Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chairperson Marlayn Mbakera, who signed the agreements on Tuesday, emphasized the urgency of enhancing distribution capabilities due to the existing backlog. The council's disaster risk management committee reported a four-month delay in distributing food, primarily because only two government trucks were available for this purpose. Mbakera highlighted the financial arrangements for the new partnerships, noting that payments to the truck owners would be calculated at N. dollars 30 per kilometre, with funds provided by th e Office of the Prime Minister and managed through the regional council. Mbakera encouraged the new transport service providers to focus on efficiency and consistency to ensure that beneficiaries receive their food parcels without unnecessary delays. She stressed the importance of reaching even the most remote distribution centers, stating, "The further the distribution centre is, the more money you can claim." Chief Regional Officer Agatha Mweti also addressed the truck owners at the signing event, which was attended by the seven constituency councillors of Tsumkwe, Grootfontein, Otavi, Otjiwarongo, Okahandja, Omatako, and Okakarara. Mweti reminded the transport providers of their responsibilities, including maintaining roadworthy vehicles, regular servicing, and employing licensed drivers. She clarified that the regional council would not bear the costs of fuel, which would be the responsibility of the truck owners. This initiative not only aims to alleviate the immediate impact of the drought by ensurin g timely food distribution but also fosters a cooperative approach between the government and the private sector in addressing national crises.
