Otjiwarongo: The Otjozondjupa Governor’s Cup 2026 was officially launched at Otjiwarongo by Governor John ||Khamuseb, with the participation of the Otavi, Okakarara, Okahandja, Omatako, and Otjiwarongo constituency councillors.
According to Namibia Press Agency, this year’s Under-20 football and netball tournament is scheduled to take place at Grootfontein on Saturday. Players from all seven constituencies of the region are expected to compete. Governor ||Khamuseb emphasized that the tournament aims to select the best players to form the region’s Under-20 teams, who will represent Otjozondjupa at the annual The Namibian Newspaper Cup in Keetmanshoop, ||Kharas Region.
The event also announced a 15-member technical committee led by John Hinda, which will travel to Grootfontein for the tournament. Paulus Nekundi, the Otjiwarongo Constituency councillor, expressed gratitude to the governor for the initiative, highlighting how sports unite communities and uncover youth talent. Nekundi pledged N.dollars 17,500 on behalf of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council for the tournament’s organization.
George Garab, representing Otavi Constituency, announced the highest pledge of N.dollars 18,000. Additionally, the local authority councils of Otavi, Okahandja, Okakarara, Grootfontein, and Otjiwarongo each pledged N.dollars 10,000.
Jeaneth Kaundje, Otjiwarongo Sports Officer in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, revealed that Augustinus Mukoya from the Correctional Services sport team will coach the football team, while Ehrenfriede Uahongora of the Namibian Defence Force will lead the netball team. The first technical meeting with the coaching staff is set for Wednesday afternoon at Grootfontein.
