Oshikuku: The Oshikuku Town Council on Tuesday launched a solar streetlights pilot project in Extension 9 aimed at improving public safety and promoting the use of renewable energy in the town. Speaking at the launch, Oshikuku mayor Julia Endjambi highlighted the initiative as part of the council's broader efforts to support sustainable development while improving living conditions in developing residential areas.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Endjambi emphasized the importance of the project in fostering safer communities and facilitating inclusive urban growth. She stated that street lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety and community well-being by reducing crime, improving mobility for residents during evening hours, and creating safer environments for families, children, and businesses.
The project has been implemented in Extension 9, a developing settlement where many residents are still awaiting full municipal services. Endjambi explained that the decision to focus the pilot project in this area was intentional, as the council believes that development should be inclusive, and even areas that are still growing deserve safety, dignity, and basic infrastructure support.
jambi further noted that the initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Development Plan Six (NDP6), which prioritizes the development of resilient infrastructure, improved service delivery, and the promotion of renewable energy solutions. She pointed out that solar energy is increasingly recognized as a key component of Namibia's energy future, and by investing in renewable technologies like solar street lighting, the town is contributing to the national agenda of reducing dependence on conventional energy sources, lowering costs, and promoting climate-friendly development.
The project is part of a partnership between the Oshikuku Town Council and Stadt Pfungstadt town in Germany.
