Oshikoto MICT Hosts Pre-Independence Film Screening

Oshikoto: The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) in the Oshikoto Region hosted a special pre-Independence film screening at Ontananga village in the Olukonda constituency on Wednesday. Oshikoto MICT Information Officer Hilma Hashange explained that the screening was aimed at ensuring that every Namibian, regardless of location, can actively participate in commemorating the nation's independence. The events educate communities about Namibia's rich history, foster national unity and patriotism, and deliver key messages directly to the people.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the film 'Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation' chronicles the Namibian independence struggle against South African occupation, focusing on the life and leadership of the late Sam Nujoma. As the founder and leader of Swapo, Nujoma became Namibia's first president following independence in 1990. He passed away in Windhoek on 08 February 2025 at the age of 95.

Hashange noted that the film would help community members gain a deeper understanding of the long and arduous road to liberation from colonial rule. It also sensitises school-going learners to the sacrifices made by Nujoma and countless others who joined the armed struggle, risking and giving their lives to secure Namibia's freedom.

The MICT team plans to continue hosting the film screenings until 20 March 2026, reaching various constituencies across the Oshikoto Region. This outreach forms part of broader efforts to build awareness and pride ahead of Namibia's Independence Day celebrations on 21 March, reinforcing shared heritage and collective progress in rural areas.
