OSHAKOTO — The Directorate of Health and Social Services in Oshikoto is gearing up for an Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign aimed at combating malaria in the region’s most affected areas, set to commence on 16 September 2024.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the head of the directorate, the IRS campaign will focus on Okankolo, Eengodi, and Nehale Lyampingana constituencies and will run from September this year until May 2025. In an interview with Nampa, Nghipangelwa explained, “We normally have a challenge with malaria in our region during malaria season and that is why we came up with the IRS exercise to stop the cases.” The IRS involves spraying the interiors of homes with insecticides to kill the mosquitoes that spread malaria.
Further emphasizing the regional health initiatives, Oshikoto Region Governor Penda Ya Ndakolo, in his recent State of the Region Address, detailed ongoing and completed health infrastructure projects. The governor announced the construction of a new 90-bed capacity maternity ward at Onandjokwe Hospital, with an investment of N$59 million aimed at enhancing service delivery and potentially reducing maternal deaths.
Additionally, Ya Ndakolo highlighted renovations at Onandjokwe State Hospital, including a N$1.8 million investment in updating a theatre to enhance service delivery and reduce patient referrals to Oshakati and Windhoek. He also noted the completion of the renovation of the Omuntele clinic, which aims to provide a better environment for patients and staff.
The governor pointed out improvements in community-based health care services, such as the construction of a 10,000-litre water tank and perimeter fencing at the Omeyantalala Health Post in the Okankolo Constituency. He also mentioned the construction of septic tanks at Onkumbula, Onyuulaye, and Onakazizi clinics to improve sanitation and hygiene facilities.
