Oshana: In a significant effort to combat drug-related crimes, police in the Oshana Region have arrested approximately 400 individuals over the past three years for possession of illegal substances, according to a police official. Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria of the Namibian Police Force revealed that 176 cases have been concluded with the accused facing fines or sentences of up to 24 months of imprisonment.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Commissioner Sakaria noted that the remaining cases are either still pending or have been withdrawn. The majority of these incidents have been reported in Oshakati, followed by Ondangwa and Ongwediva. Sakaria emphasized that the large number of arrests reflects the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to dismantle drug networks in the region. He pointed out that drug dealers often evade capture by not storing drugs in their homes, complicating police operations.
The Commissioner explained that while most arrests involve minor quantities of drugs, the law remains
stringent and all individuals involved in drug activities are subject to legal action. He encouraged community members to report any information related to drug dealing to local police. Sakaria also urged residents to avoid drug use, highlighting its potential to hinder economic development.
