Oshakati: The NamPort Oshana Regional Second Division Football League, which has been plagued by game delays since the beginning of the season due to heavy rainfall in the northern part of the country, nears its conclusion.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the league has four to five games remaining before the conclusion of the 2024/2025 season, but the title race has narrowed to three teams. Poison Arrows are at the top of the standings, followed by Brave Lions in second place, and Oshana NamPol in third, all in a favourable position to claim the title.
The league's chairperson, Styn Hamalwa, told Nampa in an interview Thursday that despite the delays due to heavy showers between November and January, he can confirm that the league will conclude by the end of July. 'We had some delays, that's why it took us this long to complete our fixtures. We had heavy rainfall that flooded most of our stadiums and we had to share these fields with the first division teams as well. But what I can tell you confidently is that we will conclude by the end of this month,' he said.
According to Hamalwa, two teams will be relegated by the end of the season, while the league champions will have the opportunity to join the North West First Division League through promotional play-offs with other affiliated regional champions.
At the top of the standings, Poison Arrows are preparing for a challenging match against mid-table Vietnam Rangers on Saturday, followed by a game against relegation-threatened Young Brave FC on Sunday. Arrows has secured an advantageous position with 39 points, holding a 10-point lead over Brave Lions. However, Brave Lions will look to reduce that gap when they face Onelago United, a team currently sitting at the bottom of the table with 10 points.
Oshana NamPol will face UNAM FC on Sunday in a must-win game to stay in contention with the leaders.
The weekend will also see Fish Consumption locking horns against the struggling Oshakati City, with Foxy Seniors going against Golden Stars. Onelago United host UNAM on Saturday, with all games scheduled at Oshakati Independence Stadium.
On Sunday, at the Uukwangula stadium, African United will entertain Vietnam Rangers to wrap up the weekend encounters.
