Oshakati – The Oshakati Intermediate Hospital reported a noticeable increase in malaria cases in December 2023, with 29 cases registered, marking a significant rise from the four cases recorded in the same month the previous year.
According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), the Medical Superintendent at the hospital, of the 29 cases in December 2023, 22 were tested at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, while seven were referrals from district hospitals. Dr. Kanime attributed the increase in malaria cases partly to the heavy rainfall earlier in the year, which likely contributed to more breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
To combat the spread of malaria, the Ministry of Health has initiated specific interventions, such as indoor residual spraying (IRS). Dr. Kanime emphasized the importance of community-based environmental management practices to reduce mosquito breeding sites. These practices include draining stagnant water, ensuring proper waste disposal, and modifying habits to minimize the risk of malaria. He also urged residents to use personal protection methods such as bed nets, insect repellents, and long-sleeved clothing to reduce skin exposure and the risk of mosquito bites.
