LAONGO — The Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism installed the commission for the 14th International Symposium of Granite Sculptures on August 27, 2024, in Laongo, just 7 km from Ziniaré, the capital of Oubritenga province.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Secretary General of the Ministry and Commissioner of the symposium, the newly appointed six-member technical body will oversee the artistic and scientific agendas for the event. Their responsibilities include defining the symposium’s themes, selecting the granite used for sculptures, and choosing professional artists from a pool of 40 applicants from nine countries, narrowing it down to 17 participants for the upcoming event.
The Commission, led by Burkinabe sculptor Siriki Ki, aims to elevate the quality of the symposium by leveraging the rich historical experiences shared between Burkina Faso and participating countries. The diversity of the Commission’s membership is crucial to achieving the high aspirations set for this year's symposium, ensuring a blend of experiences and perspectives.
In preparation for the symposium scheduled from October 3 to 24, 2024, the organizing team also met with local customary and religious leaders to seek their blessings, underscoring the cultural significance of the event that has gained international acclaim since its inception in 1989.
