Opuwo: The Opuwo Town Council has embarked on several initiatives to enhance the town’s resilience to climate change, including the ‘Go Green’ project and the ‘Zero Waste’ campaign. These efforts were announced by Mayor Rosa Mbinge-Tjeundo at a recent event marking the handover of 30 Build Together houses, the inauguration of the Katutura Open Market, and the groundbreaking for a new welcoming sign.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Mayor Mbinge-Tjeundo outlined the council’s strategic plan, which involves community-driven efforts to reduce dust and waste in the town. The ‘Go Green’ project, funded by Nedbank Namibia, aims to plant trees across Opuwo as a measure to combat dust. The ‘Zero Waste’ campaign seeks to convert waste materials into valuable resources, aspiring to make Opuwo one of Namibia’s cleanest towns while also addressing hunger in the community.

The mayor emphasized the council’s vision of transforming Opuwo into a greener and cleaner town. As part of this vision, a volunteer program was la
unched last year, enlisting 50 young people to participate in town clean-up efforts, thus creating local jobs and involving the community directly.

The Waste Management plan is grounded in a memorandum of understanding signed by the Rundu and Opuwo town councils in March 2024, aimed at ending landfill trash disposal. Urban and Rural Development Minister Erastus Uutoni praised Opuwo’s developmental progress, noting that these initiatives could elevate the town’s status, attracting investors and tourists. He commended the town’s leadership for its visionary approach to development.
