OPUWO—Opuwo Football Academy, a new initiative in the Kunene Region, aims to cultivate football talent among the youth, focusing on providing comprehensive development opportunities. Founded in 2023, this non-profit sports organization is dedicated to nurturing young football enthusiasts from the age of nine, enabling them not only to enhance their sports skills but also to secure a solid educational foundation.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Opuwo Football Academy was established to address the lack of football infrastructure in the region that had persisted until last year. Jeura Tjauira, the academy’s chairperson, emphasized the dual focus on sports and education, stating that the academy seeks to develop responsible citizens who can pursue diverse careers if professional football does not materialize. The academy has already enrolled 67 boys, with plans to expand its reach to include girls, contingent upon securing more resources.

The academy scouts potential talent through local school tournaments and casual games, with several boys from Opuwo Primary School, Okondaunue, and Otuzemba Primary already participating. Training is overseen by Marco Torres Ruundu, a former player with extensive experience in the Namibian Premier League, who brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching staff. Players receive life skills training alongside football coaching, preparing them for the multifaceted challenges of life.

Recently, the academy’s teams participated in the Ramblers Youth Tournament in Windhoek, marking their first competition outside Opuwo. Despite facing strong teams, the Under-13 and Under-15 squads showed promising talent and sportsmanship, highlighting the academy’s potential to shape future football stars.

The initiative has received initial financial support from the Irish Dads and Lads group, but continues to seek further funding to enhance its facilities and equipment. Tjauira called for more sponsorship to sustain and expand the academy’s activities, underlining the importance of community and corporate involvement in fostering local talent.
