Opposition political parties accused of targeting vulnerable former PLAN combatants

Swapo on Wednesday claimed to have evidence against opposition political parties allegedly targeting to frustrate and recruit its former People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) combatants, who are allegedly economically vulnerable.

Rector of the Swapo Party School and Deputy Secretary for Information and Mobilisation, Dr Charles Mubita in an interview with Nampa on Wednesday said his office has enough proof to this and it will therefore make sure none of its former PLAN combatants fall prey to these political “scavenging” tactics.

Mubita on Wednesday facilitated a daylong workshop at Otjiwarongo for the 15 former PLAN combatants’ association district leaders to strategise on their campaigning methods in effectively supporting their candidates in the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Mubita said a total of 103 registered former PLAN combatant association members are still alive in the Otjozondjupa Region at the Tsumkwe, Grootfontein, Otavi, Otjiwarongo, Omatako, Okakarara and Okahandja districts.

“We are aware of these opposition parties trying to lure and recruit our vulnerable war veterans who are the former PLAN combatants that liberated this country from colonial oppression, and as a ruling party we will make sure this does not happen,” he said.

On his part, acting former PLAN combatants’ association coordinator in Otjozondjupa, Gerhard Mavenjono on Thursday said the former PLAN combatants are being “told lies” by the opposition parties and frustrated by them, especially those who need health support and an economical boost.

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) local authority councillor at Otjiwarongo Municipality, Ernst Muraranganda on Thursday morning told this news agency that his party will do its best to recruit any Namibian who wants to join PDM.

The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) representative at the same local authority council, Gideon Iiyambo also said the Namibian citizens keep bringing themselves to his party without his recruitment team “sweating” to look for them in Otjozondjupa.
