One Man Killed, 400 Livestock Stolen in Turkana East

Turkana east: One man was killed and 400 livestock including cattle and goats were stolen in Lopii, Turkana East sub-county in a raid conducted by suspected bandits from a neighbouring county. The incident occurred on Thursday midday when armed bandits raided Lopii village.

According to Kenya News Agency, James Ekaru, a resident, mentioned that the community is living in fear following the daylight raid. Area Member of Parliament Nixon Ng'ikor has urged security agencies to swiftly recover the stolen livestock and return them to their rightful owners.

Ng'ikor expressed concern over the impact on herders who have lost their primary source of livelihood, particularly as schools are reopening. He speculated about possible sabotage, noting that the incident occurred shortly after the head of state visited West Pokot, advocating for peace in a meeting attended by leaders from both Turkana and West Pokot counties.

The raid has also disrupted education, with Lopii Primary School remaining closed in the first week of the new term. Teachers have stayed away due to security concerns. This incident poses a setback to peace-building efforts that had been successful in restoring normalcy in the area.
