Nairobi: A motor cycle taxi rider has died on the spot after a collision with a lorry at Namba Karabok along the Oyugis-Kendu Bay Road near Oyugis town.
According to Kenya News Agency, the accident, which occurred on Tuesday, also saw irate boda boda riders attack and set ablaze the lorry. The driver, who was heading to Kendu Bay at the time of the crash, sustained injuries during the attack. Police from Oyugis Police Station arrived at the scene and managed to rescue the driver, who was rushed to hospital for treatment. However, they were unable to save the vehicle, which had already been extensively damaged by fire.
Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Philip Saera confirmed the incident, saying officers tried to put out the fire, but the lorry was completely destroyed. "We were able to rescue the driver and rush him to hospital," he said. Saera condemned the actions of the riders, warning that those involved in taking the law into their own hands will be arrested and prosecuted.
Following the incident, sand transporters have expressed fears for their safety and have parked their lorries at the Kosele Deputy County Commissioner's compound until normalcy is restored.
