OMELA Engages Over 700 Adolescents in Citizenship and Life Skills Camp

LOUMBILA - The International Center for Evangelization, in collaboration with the Open My Eyes for Life Association (OMELA), recently hosted a camp for over 700 adolescents, focusing on vital themes of citizenship, discipline, and the impacts of information technology.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the camp held at the El Shadaï Center in Loumbila, targeted adolescents aged 12 to 18, offering them a series of conferences designed to equip them with essential life skills. One of the key presentations addressed the critical role of discipline in achieving personal and academic goals. Dori emphasized the importance of establishing priorities, managing time efficiently, developing self-discipline, and forming good habits to bridge the gap between goals and their realization.

Another significant topic discussed was the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and the potential pitfalls for young people. Dori highlighted the negative effects of excessive mobile phone use, including addiction, mental health issues, and the disruption of sleep and physical activities. He stressed the importance of adolescents maintaining balanced phone usage, suggesting practical measures like limiting screen time and promoting face-to-face interactions over online communications.

The conference series also covered 'Citizenship in Adolescence', presented by Timothée Nadinga, OMELA's mobilization officer. Nadinga explored the concept of citizenship beyond political participation, encouraging a broader understanding that includes social, ethical, and environmental responsibilities. He underlined the importance of civic education and community engagement, aiming to foster a generation that is aware of their rights and duties within a democratic society.

OMELA, an ecumenical, apolitical non-profit organization, aims through these initiatives to nurture a generation that is well-informed, socially responsible, and prepared to achieve their highest potential.
