Gobabis—Old Mutual Namibia has initiated the Omaheke Gardens project aimed at combating hunger by supporting schoolchildren and their families through sustainable gardening practices.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiative was launched recently in Gobabis with the goal of establishing gardens at six strategic locations around the town. These sites include Gobabis Combined School, Epako Pre-School Development Centre, Val en Opstaan Kindergarten, Epako Clinic-Malnutrition Soup Kitchen, United Childcare Association, and Light of the Children School. The project promises to provide a steady supply of fresh produce to improve the nutrition and overall health of learners and their communities.
Ndangi Katoma, Managing Director of the Retail Mass Foundation, underscored the importance of community participation in this initiative. He emphasized that the involvement of local residents in the planning and harvesting phases is crucial to the project’s success. “The Omaheke Gardens project is not just about planting seeds, it’s about planting hope. By working together, we can provide our children with the nourishment they need to thrive in their education and in life,” Katoma remarked during a media statement on Wednesday.
He further noted that the gardens are intended to serve as vital resources for the community, providing essential nutrients needed to combat hunger and encourage healthier lifestyles. Katoma also highlighted the broader social benefits of the project, including educating community members on agriculture and nutrition and fostering a sense of ownership and cooperation among participants.
