Otjinene: The Okaoveni football team and Black Beauty netball team respectively won the Otjinene May tournament staged at the Otjinene sports field on Monday. The annual tournament, organized by the Otjinene Sport Association, had a total prize worth of N.dollars 22,000 and attracted 20 football teams alongside four netball teams.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Okaoveni secured their place in the final by defeating Mighty Bucks with a single goal in the first semifinal. Eiseb FC progressed to the final by overcoming Fine Young Stars 2-0 in the second semifinal. The final match between Okaoveni and Eiseb ended in a goalless draw, leading to a penalty shootout where Okaoveni clinched victory 4-3. As champions, Okaoveni received a trophy, N.dollars 10,500, and 20 gold medals. Eiseb, as runners-up, were awarded N.dollars 5,500 and 20 silver medals. The semifinalists, Fine Young Stars and Mighty Bucks, each received N.dollars 3,000 for their efforts.
In the netball competition, teams Epata, Golden Chicago, Black Beauty, and Mighty Bucks competed in a round-robin format. Black Beauty emerged victorious in the finals against Mighty Bucks with a score of 21-14. The winning team was awarded a trophy, 12 gold medals, and a cash prize of N.dollars 800, while the runners-up received N.dollars 400 and 12 silver medals.
Otjinene Sport Association president Alfons Hiurika expressed satisfaction with the large crowd the tournament attracted. He emphasized the tournament's role in providing a platform for local youth to showcase their talent despite the less-than-ideal field conditions. Hiurika called on the Otjinene community, including farmers and businesspeople, to support future tournaments to foster the development of sports and provide young talents the opportunity to represent the country at higher levels.
