Ohangwena’s Sports Facilities Investments Yield Positive Results: Hamutumwa

Eenhana: Ohangwena Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa on Friday highlighted that government investment in sports infrastructure in the region is already yielding positive results, as reflected in the achievements of local athletes over the past year.

According to Namibia Press Agency, during her State of the Region Address in Eenhana, Hamutumwa emphasized the importance of continued investment in sports, which is strengthening talent development and community participation. This positions the region as an emerging sporting hub. She noted, "The government continues to recognise sport as a powerful catalyst for youth empowerment, social cohesion, talent development and economic growth."

Hamutumwa remarked that sport has been identified as a strategic priority under the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6). The region recorded several notable sporting achievements during the 2025/26 reporting period, showcasing the positive impact of ongoing investment in sports infrastructure. Notably, athletes Saara Haindongo, Linda Hailulu, and Elizabeth Kalola represented Namibia at the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Games, returning with outstanding results, including a silver medal.

Furthermore, Hamutumwa announced that seven athletes from Ohangwena have qualified to represent Namibia at the Region 5 Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Mozambique in December 2026.

She also highlighted the continued expansion of the Eenhana Sports Stadium as a flagship project for the region. Phases 5A to 5C of the stadium project have been completed at a total cost of N$12.3 million. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, along with the Namibia Training Authority, facilitated the project, with the Eenhana Vocational Training Centre implementing the works. The completed developments include modern changing rooms, electrical reticulation, an irrigation system, installation of the football pitch, and consultancy services for the design of Phase 5D.

Hamutumwa announced that the government has launched an ambitious programme to expand grassroots sports infrastructure across the country, including in Ohangwena. An initial allocation of N$10 million has been made for the construction of two basic sports facilities, each valued at N$5 million, in the Okongo and Engela constituencies. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the projects were held in March this year. "These facilities will not only promote active lifestyles but will also serve as centres for talent identification, youth development and community engagement," she said.
